“You’re vegan? Oh, it must be such a difficult and expensive lifestyle!” is the standard response all vegans receive. A rather redundant one these days, if you ask us. Veganism is a lifestyle that is here to stay with a growing number of people practising it every day.

The conventional definition of veganism is a lifestyle choice that excludes animal-based products, particularly in diet. However, Veganism is much more than just a diet. It is a way of life that is clean, conscious and holistic which proves that you care for more than just yourself. Today, we need to be aware and lead lives that do not cause more harm to the environment we live in and researchers at the University of Oxford found that cutting meat and dairy products from your diet could reduce an individual's carbon footprint from food by up to 73 per cent.

It’s not an easy transition, we agree but it sure is one that is worth it. Veganism is sustainable and healthy, decreasing the land and water used by the food you consume. And what’s more? It really is not rocket science!

To help you ease into the process of turning vegan, here are some of our favourite and simple substitutions.

1. Milk Vs Non-Dairy Milk

The most important ingredient in almost all Indian households is milk. From the time we can remember we have been fed cow’s milk for it’s supposed nutritional benefits. Well, believe it or not, non-dairy substitutes like Almond Milk, Soy Milk, Oat Milk are all tastier and far healthier substitutes.

2. Nutritional Yeast Vs Cheese

Yes, cheese is irresistible but you can beat your cravings with a substitute that is just as delicious and healthier. Nutritional Yeast is high in protein and B vitamins and contains all nine essential amino acids, making it the complete substitute for animal protein.

3. Meat Vs Mock Meat

If you are someone who has consumed meat all your lives, it can be hard to let go of. However, think about this, they are living, breathing beings with feelings just like us right? If you’re not a great fan of soy chunks, luckily today we have new meatless meat called Mock Meat and it’s now available in India! Jackfruit is a great replacement for meat as well owing to its textural similarity.

4. You Vs The Restaurant

Have you ever wondered, ‘How many options do vegans have in a restaurant?’ while trying to pick a place to eat? Consciously making the choice to go to restaurants that offer a range of vegan options encourages more restaurateurs to widen their menu and shows your support to the vegan community. Always ask your host, “What are the vegan options?” and who knows, there might be a variety of scrumptious delights to try!

Last, but definitely not the least -

5. Toxic Makeup Vs Cruelty-free Makeup

The beauty industry alone accounts for the most animal cruelty, unaccounted labour and unethical sourcing. Which is why choosing clean, conscious and vegan beauty is a choice that is not just for your benefit, but for the world. It’s not that difficult! Vegan beauty is easily available and instils a feeling of Clean Awakening, knowing that you have chosen a life of kindness, love and healing.

The basis of veganism is kindness. It is showing your compassion towards fellow beings who have just as much a right to live freely on this planet as you do. Being vegan is being a person of love, positivity and the ability to think and act with care. It surely is one of the best ways of life.
